Arequipa – Cusco

Distance: 523 kms. Estimated duration: 10-11hrs.
This route is an alternative to the option Arequipa-Juliaca-Cusco which is more extense (608 kms) but is asphalted. Please look at the route Arequipa-Juliaca in this chapter and Juliaca-Cusco in the pampas of the highland.
Arequipa – Sicuani (377 kms). Estimated duration: 8hrs. Route 28. Road asphalted in its first 76 kms. Departs from Arequipa and its first stage passes bye Yura (Km 24) and after 52 kms at Patahuasi. At this point, on non-asphalted road, advances to the north and crosses Vizcachani (Turn-off to Chivay Colca Canyon), Enters the National Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca, and leaves it at km 133, arrives at San Bartolome and extends to Pulpera (Km 141). The route continues this time northeast, and 10 kms after the turn-off to Sibayo, arrives at the top of Apacheta and another 13 kms further the bridge of Condorama over the Colca. Continues uphill climb and reaches the mountain pass of Negro Mayo at 4,770 m.a.s.l and continues heading north to the mountain pass Martin at 4,400 m.a.s.l, from where it starts descending to the village of Yauri (Hotel, petrol station and basic restaurants are here available) and to the department of Cusco. From this point to Sicuani the non-asphalted road is not in very good conditions. Crosses the village of  El Descanso (Turn-off right to Yanacoa) and passes bye the great lake of Kanghi; descends from a beautiful mountain pass and continues to Sicuani, town which offers all the basic services one requires.
Sicuani – Cusco (146 kms). Estimated duration; 2hrs. The Route 3-S continues descending, crosses the towns of San Pablo, San Pedro, Tinta, Combapata, Checacupe, Cusipata, Quiquijana, Urcos y Huaro, and arrives at Andahuaylillas,  in the Valley of  the River Vilvcanota 50 kms from Cusco. Continues through the Valley River of Huatanay and crosses the towns of Oropesa, Saylla (Toll ), San Jeronimo and San Sebastian before reaching Cusco City.
