Lima-Huacho: Distance: 160
kms. Estimated duration: 2 ½ hrs.
4 lane highway. Slow traffic until Puente Piedra (km
30). After the deviation which leads you to Ancon (km
44) and passing the police check point (Take note that
you may not exceed according to the road sign 60 km/h
until reaching the bridge). We reach hereby the
distribution of lightweight and heavyweight vehicles. By
passing under the bridge you will be taking the
lightweight route which will take you directly to
Huacho. Other waypoint are the roundabout of Chancay (Km
83, turn-off to Huaral), deviation to the National
Reserve of Lomas de Lachay (Km 103), Las Salinas (Km
130) and the toll booth El Paraiso. |

Huacho -
Casma: Distance: 218 kms.
Estimated duration: 3hrs.
Its recommendable to drive this section by daylight, due
to strong traffic of busses and trucks. The first
waypoint is Huaura (Km 164, Petrol Station). Town in
which has kiosk on the sides of the road, where you may
buy some drinks as well as biscuits. Exiting the town of
Huaura you will see the turn-off road to Sayan asphalted.
Other waypoints are : Supe (Km 188; be careful with
tight curves before reaching the port), Barranca (Km
197; there good petrol stations, restaurants and hotels
available) and Police check point in Pativilca (km 209),
the starting point of the turn-off to Huaraz.
Take note: from this point to Huarmey you will not find
any services. At Km 204 deviation to Cajatambo (On your
right hand) and Paramonga on your left hand side). Last
waypoints; entrance to Huarmey (Km 296, after passing
bye the entrance to the port of Huarmey) and Puerto
Culebras (Km 311). Dangerous curve 5 kms before arriving
in Casma (Km 378), from where starts a deviation to
Huaraz. Take note: You should fill your tank with petrol
in Huarmey. The section which joins this city with Casma
passes bye a deserted zone without any petrol station
services. |

CASMA -
CHIMBÓTE: Distance: 56 kms.
Estimated
duration: 40 minutes.
The section Casma-Chimbote
route does not represent any problem with exception of
some curves in the Casma Valley ; On the route deviation
to the beach resort Tortugas (km 395 on your left) and
Visique (Km 415 toll booth), Huambacho bridge (Km 400)
entrance to the local airport through the Via de
Evitamiento. The Panameicana passes through the city of
Chimbote (Km 434) very near the main square of the city. |

CHIMBOTE-TRUJILLO: Distance:
132 kms. Estimated duration: 1 1/2/ hrs.
Highway in perfect conditions. Passes in front of the
Police Check point (at km 434), crosses the tunnel at (Km
437) and arrives in Coishco (Km 442). Crosses the road
that leads you to Huaraz at the Km 446 a shortly before
reaching the Santa bridge. Other waypoints are the towns
of: De Chao (Km 501) and Viru (Km 518; toll booth and
petrol station). Crosses the highway that leads you to
Salaverry (Left hand side) and Otuzco (Km 563). The last
section before reaching the city of Trujillo (Km 566) is
a long and steep descent which will require you to
reduce your speed. |

TRUJILLO-CHICLAYO: Distance:
213 kms. Estimated duration: 2hrs and 45minutes - 3hrs.
The Pan Americana crosses the Valleys of Chicama (Km
607; toll booth) and Jequetepeque-Zaña. First waypoint:
Chicama (km 607; toll booth). Afterwards : deviation or
turn-offs to Chiclin, Cartavio and Casa Grande and the
towns of Chocopec (Km 616; Turn off to Ascope and
Contumaza) and Paijan (Km 627). In this last waypoint to
Puerto Malabrigo by non recommendable road (20 minutes).
Other waypoints : San Pedro de Lloc (Km 670; be aware of
dunes which may obstruct the road) and Pacasmayo (Km 681
Petrol Station) both are roads that avoid traffic which
are called in Spanish language “ Via de Evitamiento” and
spares you between 10 to 15 minutes. In Ciudad de Dios
you will find the turn-off to Cajamarca (Km 969, on your
right) passing the “ Via de Evitamiento” of Guadalupe
you arrive in Chepen (Km 709). Last waypoints of the
journey are; Motupe (Km 745), deviation to Zana (Km 748)
and deviation to Eten. Finally you pass bye Reque (Km
771) and arrive in Chiclayo at Km 779. |

CHICLAYO-PIURA: Distances: 213 kms / 257 kms.
Estimated times 2 ½
hrs to 4 hrs.
Passing the city of Lambayeque (Km 799), the
Panamericana highway bifurcates. 1st highway: is the new
highway (Left hand side) Lambayeque-Piura. Distance 213
kms. Estimated duration 2 ½ hrs this highway is in very
good conditions and crosses the dessert of Sechura. Fill
your tank with petrol before continuing the journey.
Waypoints: Morrope (Km 819 toll booth), deviation to
Bayovar (Km 902) and to Catacaos (Km 992) and last,
Piura (Km 992). 2nd highway is the old one, which is
heads Lambayeque-Motupe-Olmos-Piura. Distance 257 kms.
Estimated duration 4 hrs. Highway is in good state until
Olmos , and with very little maintenance from that point
onwards till Piura. It borders the Sechura dessert and
also comes near to the highlands. Crosses Mochumi,
Tucume, Illimo ( at 24 kms from Lambayeque) and Pacora;
passes bye Jayanca and continues to Motupe (66 kms from
Lambayeque), crosses the Marginal de la Selva Highway
and reaches Olmos (92 kms from Lambayeque). Last
waypoints; Insculas, Naupe (Be careful with the uphill
drive), deviation to Canchaque and Huancabamba (Km 192;
right hand on a non recommendable road), Deviation to
Chulucanas (km 206 right hand) and Piura (257 kms from
Lambayeque) |

PIURA
SULLANA- LA TINA: Distance:
168 kms.
Section considered as the last stage of the Northern
Panamericana Highway. Between Piura (Km 992) and Sullana
(Km 1032) is asphalted, in good conditions but with the
side of the highway very narrow which makes it very
difficult to park your car in case of an emergency; the
rest of the highway section is asphalted and in good
conditions. Waypoints; Tambo Grande (Km 1076), Las Lomas
(Km 1109), Quiroz and Suyo. Culminates at the limit
bound with Ecuador, North east of the city of Piura. The
frontier city of La Tina is located at km 1,160. |

SULLANA-TALARA-TUMBES:
Distance: 249 kms.
Estimated duration:
4hrs.
Even though it is officially not a principal part of the
Pan Americana it is considered as a branch of the Pan
Americana highway. This section is the most transited
part of the highway. Starting from Sullana (Km 1,032)
from where there is a turn-off to the left to Paita,
afterwards borders the Chira Valley, ascends through
Tablazos Petroleros and and after a long drive in
parallel with the coast of Tumbes. On this road you will
pass bye a variety of towns; Mallaritos, Saman, Ignacio,
Escudero. 75 kms from Sullana one passes bye the turn-off
to Tallara. 12 kms further the route is confronted with
a very dangerous uphill drive known as “ Cuesta de La
Viuda” (Known as the steep uphill drive of the widow)
afterwards you one reaches “ El Alto” and “ Cabo Blanco”
(118 kms from Sullana). Shortly after driving through a
plateau from where you can observe a petrol extraction
field, initiates a steep descent which ends up in Los
Oreganos (133 kms from Sullana), this place has
beautiful beaches such as Punta Veleros and Vichayito.
From this point on a old section of the Pan Americana
highway you can reach Mancora ( at 147 kms distance)
Turn off to Punta Sal (168 kms), Caneas (175 kms,
Zorritos (222 kms) and La Cruz ( 231 from Sullana). To
Tumbes (249 kms from Sullana) one arrives crossing a
bridge over the Tumbes River. From this City to Aguas
Verdes (Frontier City with Ecuador) there are 26 kms of
asphalted road. |
