Routes from Lima Southern Coast

 

LIMA-CAÑETE: Distance: 143 kms. Estimated duration: 2hrs.

From the crossing at Javier Prado (Km 3.7) up till Km 131, in the turn-off to Cerro Azul, The southern Pan Americana highway; is a 4 lane highway in this short journey there are three toll booths: km 20 (After the deviation to Chorillos), 45 (Turn-off to Punta Negra) and 66 (Chuca). From this highway starts the various turn-off to well known beaches such as: El Silencio, Señoritas, Caballeros (km 41 -43), Punta Hermosa (km 44), Punta Negra (km 45), San Bartolo (km 51), Santa María (km 52), Pucusana, Naplo (km 58), Chuca (km 64), Puerto Viejo (km 71), León Dormido (km 80), Totoritas (km 90), Bujama (km 92) and Cayma (km 97). In the last section of this route you will find the turn-offs to the beach resorts of Cerro Azul Cerro Azul (km 131) and Lunahuaná (km 143).

 

CAÑETE-ICA: Distance: 158 kms. Estimated duration: 2hrs.

From Cañete (Petrol Stations) to Jahuay (km 179, Toll Booth) the Pan Americana runs in parallel along the Pacific coast, and afterwards turns left just shortly before Chincha, crosses the Pampa of Villacuri and arrives in Ica. Important waypoint in this stage is: Chincha Alta (km 196), town in which you will find many stores, gas stations, banks as well as mechanic car services and lodgings.  A little bit further you will find the turn off route to Ayacucho (Via Los Libertadores Km 227), Pisco (Km 232) and Paracas (Km 245). We recommend to drive acrefully between  kms 154 and 170 (This is a dessert aerea, and has some villages as well as fog).

 

ICA-NAZCA: Distance: 149 kms. Estimated duration: 2hrs.

The Pan Americana highway passes bye Ocucacaje (Km 335), and continues on deserted Pampas of Huayuri (Gamonal) until the Santa Cruz Bridge  (Palpa Tunnel). In this case we suggest you to take the Variante which has many curves and a steep descent. After crossing the Rio Grande and Palpa (Km 399), the route enters the valley of Nazca (Km 420) and the Pampas of San Jose, where you will find the famous Nazca Lines. After passing bye the toll booth, the Aja bridhe anounces the arrival in Nazca (Km 450).

 

NAZCA-CAMANA: Distance: 391 kms. Estimated duration: 5-6hrs

Before initiating this stage it is important to take into consideration that the area between Nazca and Chala are deserted and has only few gas stations, the same conditions is between Ocoña y Camaná. Between Nazca (Km 450) and Camana (Km 841) the highway sporadically runs close to the coast line and pierces a lengthy dessert area. The highway also runs through vast dessert areas between the mining centres of Marcona and Acari (Km 489 and km 525). Passes bye the turn off to Lomas (Km 533) until reaching the valley of  Chaviña (km 558) and Yauca (km 572). Runs  near the Cordillera of the coast, this zone has many tight curves and nearly always moist or rainy, also sand may slide on to the road and also foggy conditions, this road crosses the valley of Antiquipa (Km 601). Descents from steep down slopes until arriving in Chala (km 620, service stations available) Between Chala and Atico (Km 709 where there is a police check point and a toll booth) there are many curves and between Atico and La Planchada (Km 762) sections which has mud and sand slides, also you may encounter stormy winds with sand  (Paracas). On the last section, La Planchada-Camana, you cross the Ocoña bridge (360 mts)  three tunnels and a Police check point as well as the town of  Ocoña (Km 784, where you will find a service station) The city of Camana in which you will find all required services is located at Km 841.

 

CAMANÁ DESVÍO MOQUEGUA: Distance: 306 kms.

Estimated duration: 4-5hrs.

From Camana the Pan Americana does not represent any difficulties until the turn-off  to Quilca (Km 852, toll booth, asphalted road). At this point the road turns away from the coast line and begins to climb steeply  ( Cuesta del Toro, foggy area) until Km 925, where the uphill drive becomes less steep, crossing the pampas of Sihuas and the irrigation of Majes. After passing the tunnel “ El Impertinente” and the deviation to Vitor (Km 955) (Used to be km 948) you arrive at the distribution (Km 974) (Used to be Km 966). In this place the Pan Americana highway shares some kilometres with route 30, which leads you to Matarani, towards Arequipa, turn right until the deviation to La Pampa de la Joya (Very foggy zone) and turn left before passing the tunnels Fiscal 1 & 2 (Zig Zag  road, very tight curves which are not totally sign posted) afterwards you will leave behind the crossing to Cocachacra, bording the hill sides of Chucarapi and cross Pampas Salinas. Finally you leave the sea coast line behind passing by La Pampas Clemesi, ciñe  hill top  Pan de Azúcar  and arrive to the deviation to Moquegua.

 

TACNA: Distance: 154 kms. Estimated duration: 2hrs.

With the Moquegua river on your right ( This section is known as the Pisco Route), The Pan Americana advances with heading to the coast line until the deviation to Ilo (Km 1.195) where it tunrs-off to the left, continues on the parallel (But far off he coast) the coast , passes bye the deviation to Toquepala and reaches the Control Check point in Camiara. The follwing three important waypoints are the Aduana complex of Tomasiri (Toll booth) and the turn off to Yaras and Sama Grande (Km 1,261 on the right hand and also left hand). The Deviation to Tarata and the Aliance point indicates the arrival into Tacna. (km 1,301).

 

ILO-TACNA: Distance: 156 km. Estimated duration: 1 ½ hrs.

ILO is attached to Tacna and also by the Costanera Sure highway. This is a asphalted highway in good conditions which departing from Ilo it continues in parallel to the coast line of the Pacific sea, passes bye the airport , Boliviamar, this is a long section with tight curves and uphill climbs reaching the small port of Sama (Km 76). Afterwards the road continues to the summer bathing resort of Boca del Rio and Pozo Redondo (Toll booth) where road turns left, and moves away from the sea and eventually arrives in Tacna.
