Lima-La Oroya-Huancayo Distance: 298 kms.
Estimated Duration: 5-6hrs.
Lima-Ticlio
(133 kms). Asphalted road with many trailers on route.
Dangerous from December till April due to heavy rains,
snow and fog in the afternoons and evenings. The road is
in very good condition as well as very well signalized.
It is important to take into consideration that this
road is under constant reparation due to mud slides and
in some stretches you might have to use one lane roads.
You will endure pronounced uphill drive, many curves and
some abyss. Anticipate other driver’s bad driving
skills. A very fair extension of this route you will be
at 3500 m.a.s.l. therefore it is always important to
take preventives for height sickness, a good advice is
to ask your tour operator for oxygen cylinder tanks. The
principal waypoints on this route are: Chosica (km 37),
Matucana (Km 75) San Mateo (Km 94), Chicla (Km 105) and
Casapalca (116). Ticlio-La Oroya (46 kms) from the
mountain pass Anticona the highest point is Ticlio at
4,850 m.a.s.l, the road starts descending passing bye
Morococha (Km 138) and arrives in la Oroya (Km 174;
3,750 m.a.s.l) at this point the road has a bifurcation
please be sure to take the correct route; Huancayo is to
your right hand and Cerro de Pasco to your left hand. In
la Oroya you will find petrol stations and here you can
also buy some foods such as sandwiches or cookies.
Before arriving to the town of La Oroya there are some
acceptable restaurants called “ Muruhuay” , “ El Tambo”
and “ Central” . La Oroya-Huancayo (124 kms). This is a
long route and on the edge of the River Mantaro. Slow
descent with many curves. The stretch between La Oroya
and the Matachico Bridge (36 kms) which used to be in a
bad state has been well repaired. You will find the
landscape very beautiful and attractive. The Stuart
Bridge which gives access to the Mantaro Valley is in
operative order; from there you can reach city of Jauja
(Km 80, Left hand) and the deviation point to the Paca
lagoon (4 kms). The road continues through the Mantaro
valley and bifurcates in two, on the left route of the
river (120 kms) this is the recommended route due to the
reason that this is a 4 lane road which passes bye the
towns of Concepcion, San Jeronimo (Please be careful
with the road humps) and Hualhuas before reaching the
city of Huancayo. On your right this route is 114 kms
long, the road is in good state and passes bye the towns
or villages of Atura, Orcotuna, Sicaya and Pilcomayo
before arriving in Huancayo city. |

LA OROYA-TARMA. Distance: 55 kms. Estimated
duration: 1hr.
From
La Oroya you continue the route by taking the road
to Cerro de Pasco; 22 kms (Las Vegas) take the
deviation to Tarma (On your right hand). The road is
asphalted and initiates with a short uphill drive,
please be aware that this road may have some holes.
When initiating downhill drive be aware that you
will find this stretch of the route with a lot of
strong and dangerous curves, abyss as well as some
parts of the road without any asphalt in bad
conditions. Also be aware of people and animals
crossing the road frequently. |

TARMA-LA MERCED. Distance: 73 kms. Estimated
duration: 2hrs.
Asphalted road in good condition, a descent
initiates starting from Acobamba and passes bye
Palca, this is the city with the best medical rural
care post on route. This route has many curves and
abyss, crosses Carpapata, known as the mudslides
area (Please be aware of obstacles on route). You
will go through tunnels and beginning of Jungle
climate and vegetation, a very important waypoint on
route is the city of San Ramon which lays 10 kms
before reaching La Merced. La Merced- Pozuzo.
Passing bye13 kms the city of La Merced you will
find a non asphalted deviation on the left which
will take you to San Luis de Shuaro and the bridge
of Paucartambo. Continuing on this route and passing
the bridge the road will bifurcate, on your right
hand the road will lead you to Villa Rica (20 kms)
and on your left to Oxampampa (50 kms). From this
city onwards it will lead you to the village of
Pozuzo (3.5 hrs drive) on a very narrow non
asphalted road. La Merced – Satipo, if you do not
take the deviation to San Luis de Shuaro, you will
then continue on asphalted road to Satipo (3.5 hrs)
crossing a bridge over the Chanchamayo River.
Afterwards you will pass bye a town called Perene
arriving at Pichanaki, located 69 kms from La
Merced. The road continues south-east, 52 kms
afterwards you will arrive in Satipo.
Satipo-Concepcion (209 kms) estimated duration 6hrs.
Non asphalted road in good conditions up till
Mariposas (35 kms from Satipo). From there on the
road gets very narrow, with many holes and goes
uphill with many curves until reaching 3,800 m.a.s.l
80 kms from Satipo. You continue uphill 15 kms
afterwards (Mountain pass Tortuga) you will reach
4,390 m.a.s.l from there on downhill on narrow and
non asphalted road until arriving Comas (152 kms
from Satipo). You will again drive uphill and pass
bye a second mountain pass at 4,500 m.a.s.l, from
there on again you will start descending but this
time on a more broader road until arriving at Ocopa
(200 kms from Satipo) after another 9 kms you will
arrive in Concepcion. |

LA OROYA-HUÁNUCO. Distance: 232 kms. Estimated
duration: 5-6hrs.
Asphalted road in good conditions and well
signalized until Cerro de Pasco; from there on the
road is in a regular state (Please be aware of holes
on the road). La Oroya-Junin (54 kms). This road
section crosses the deviation to Tarma (Las Vegas km
22) continues in parallel to the River Paccha and
ascends to the plateau of Bombon. Crosses at km 214
the deviation to San Pedro de Cajas and afterwards
passes bye the historical Sanctuary of Chacamarca
where you can see the commemorative monument of the
battle of Junin. 54 kms from La Oroya you will
reach the turn-off point to the city of Junin. Junin-deviation
to Cerro de Pasco (64 kms). This route is very
difficult due to the hight which crosses the plateau
of Chinchaycocha which has various straight long
road planes ( you can appreciate the Lake of Junin)
and after 30 kms you arrive at the town of
Carhuamayo. From this point after 8 kms you will
pass bye the town of Ninacaca and 20 kms more Vicco
known as a mining town. After 9 more kms you will
find the deviation to Cerro de Pasco. Deviation
Cerro de Pasco-Huanuco (114 kms). A very strong
downhill drive with dangerous curves. From Chicrin
onward the road is in regular conditions. You may
find mudslides on the road during rainy season
(November till May). Important waypoints before
arriving in Huanuco are the towns of Huarica (Km
175), San Rafael (Km 182) and Ambo (Km 211). |

HUANUCO-TINGO MARÍA-PUCALLPA. Distance: 371 kms.
Estimated duration: 12hrs in
dry season; 20hrs in rainy season. The mudslide
affects seriously this route during the months of
January to March. Dense fog and strong curves. It is
recommendable to drive on this route during
daylight. Huánuco-Tingo María (116 kms). Duration:
2-3hrs. Asphalted road. The route has many curves,
especially after the tunnel of Carpish (430 mts
long) 30 km from Huánuco and 2,700 m.a.s.l. Strong
slopes. The deviation to Monzon (left) gives way to
the arrival to Tingo Maria. Tingo María-Pucallpa
(255 kms). This route can only be done in daylight
by car or 4x4 in optimum conditions. Pucallpa is
located at km O and Tingo María on Km 255, therefore
the kilometre counting is regressive. Asphalted
road in its first 20 kms (deviation to Tocache);
this point onwards the road is non asphalted and in
bad conditions until reaching a large opening called
Boqueron del Padre Abad, from where at this point
the road again is asphalted until reaching Aguaytia,
where you will find petrol stations and basic
services. Be aware that some sections on the road
from Aguaytia to Pucallpa you may find cement blocks
on the road; this is to avoid using the road as a
landing runway for clandestine airplanes. Also watch
out for road humps whilst entering the towns. |
