The more than 154 000 hectares covering the Bay of San Fernando in Nasca,is the refuge and natural habitat of some 252 species of birds, about 90 varieties of fish and shellfish, plus a dozen mammals and reptiles that inhabit in perfect harmony, with 90 species of plants and important seagrass beds. All this natural wealth is better protected due to the fact that since last week this area has been now declared National Reserve.
This new title was decided unanimously at the last Council of Ministers last Wednesday, which gave the final categorization of National Reserve of SanFernando.
“With this declaration not only provide greater protection but will bring a better plan for the conservation of important natural resources,” said Environment Minister Antonio Brack.
This area also inhabit the Andean condor, guanaco, puma and Andean fox, as well as major cultural and scenic resources to be preserved to avoid extinction.
Spokesmen for the National Service of Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp) confirmed that this categorization of San Fernando will continue to benefit local communities insustainable use of its vast and unique natural resources. The difference is that there will be plans of management and ecosystem preservation.
“This benefit also includes some tourism and industrial activities taking place in the reserve and its buffer zone, but with more control and protection to avoid the disruption and damage to this unique coastal area,” they said.
